5. Fire- Because of the denseness of a straw bale wall, fire burns through a bale wall 6 times slower than through a wood frame wall.
6. Pests- Straw has NO nutritional value for both rodents and bugs and like any structure sealing up the outer building envelopes protects the interior from any pest.

Why isn't this type of building more common in this area?

The earliest straw bale buildings are located in Nebraska and were built just prior to the last century, however, there has been a steady increase in straw bale construction over the last 40 years. There are thousands of buildings and homes in most states and many countries with a majority of the buildings in the West, South West, and Mid-west. Traditionally, there have been two types of building with straw bale, both of which are not completely compatible with this region's climate:

1. Nebraska Style -Which is not viable for snow load areas.
2. Wood Post and Beam Style-In-fill creates challenges with lateral loads and limits design to plaster and/or stucco exterior only.
